Lenovo T410 Shuts Off Immediately Upon Docking

Hello guys,

I have a Lenovo T410 and two docking stations for it. It works perfectly fine on one of them but it will shut down immediately upon docking on the other one and it will not start any more when the power button (its own or the one on the docking station) is pressed.

As it is working on one of the docking stations, I don't assume the problem is in the laptop. Just in case I tried with another one and had the same result.

Any ideas what might be wrong with the docking station and how I could repair it?

Thanks.

Just for information: I read this and it's not the same problem because my laptop will not work on the docking station at any moment, even when Windows is not running.

I would start by checking the contact on the docking station. It could be that some of the pins or connectors are damaged or touching each other.  Does your docking station have lights to indicated that it has power and when it is docked?

There are no lights that are lit when the laptop is not on the station (same on the other one) There is one light that goes on when the laptop is docked but it does not go that far.

The visible connectors seem to be OK, I cannot see any damage. Maybe I need to open it and check inside.

Check the capacitors on any circuit boards when you have it open - they should flat, not rounded tops and there should not be any discolored material next to them (www.badcaps.net).  Also check for any burn marks, which would be a sign of electrical arcing.

Use a voltmeter to test the power supply to make sure it is delivering the correct voltage for the docking station.
