We have just carried out an SMTP test using MXTOOLBOX, and obtained the following warning :-

5.803 seconds - Warning on Transaction Time

We are using a single Microsoft sbs2011 running exchange.

Is this an issue, and if so, what can we do about it??

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's not ideal, and many sending servers may not wait that long for a response.

The problem is most likely caused by either your Modem or Router.  What is your Internet connection?  What make/model router/firewall are you using?

It could also be the NIC settings, but less likely.

But the first thing to do is to repeat the test a number of times to see if it's consistent.  You can also use http://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com to see what that site says.

@nigelbeatson,

Transction time is betweem the mxtoolbox and your server which not necessarily means that the issue is at your email server. It could be possible that the time when you did the test there were some issue with mxtoolbox's side.

If you would have not faced any problem yet from any of your client you have nothing to worry about.
On exchange 2010 is that normal and it is called tarpitting. It is used to make difficult directory harvest attack on your server. Communication is delayed on purpose and default delay value is 5 seconds.
