How to copy a VM from ESXi to Workstation 8

Hi EE,

I want to copy a VM hosted on ESXi to Workstation 8. Mainly so that I can do some tests on the machine similar to one in production. I have seen on the net how to copy a VM from Workstation 8 to ESXi but not the other way round.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks hanccocka,

Have done <1. Power Off the VM, Select the VM, and Select File, Export, Export OVF - this will export the VM "as is" > and the VM is exporting as template. Is that what you meant by VM.

I've also install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone

and will check out your article.
Yes, be careful because Export OVF function can be tempermental. It will be exported as an O
VF file, so you can import from this OVF file.

Converter works 100% all the time.

The export was completed and now vm is on my machine. I have installed the convertor on my machine (used server and client option). Can I use this to get the vm running on workstation 8 now.

Thanks

Thanks hanccocka for the solution. Workstation 8 was able to convert my experted vm template. Also I have installed vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0 and can access VMs on Esxi servers.
