Also would an upgrade to a 2gb video card, or a higher resolution screen be a better upgrade?

sounds fine, but opt for higher res screen (1600x900) unless you are hardcore gaming, then get both

There are a lot of considerations.  However, overall this looks like an excellent system for a good price.

The basic things I focus on are:
-CPU: i7
-RAM: 8GB
-Hard Drive Size: 500 GB
-Screen Size: 14"

This is a high performance system.

Other considerations:
-Storage: Is 500 GB enough? What do you plan to load on this system?
-Specific Software requirements: Are you planning to install a specific Game/application that has specific requirements for the Video card (manufacture)?
-Hours of use: How many hours are you likely to use your laptop disconnected from a wall outlet? Does the battery give you enough hours?
-Weight: How heavy is the lap top and how often will you have to carry it from one location to another?

Some of these considerations might not be important to you.  For example you may not plan to carry your lap top around.  In that case you might consider a cheaper desktop.
