SBS 2008 percent free disk space

I would like to know how to approach this. I am a small biz owner and do most of my own IT stuff by getting help here on EE.

Issue is "performace threshold alert, percent free disk space"

I found this article, but, want to get EE input before jumping into this.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/09/23/how-to-move-wsus-content-and-database-files-to-a-different-partition.aspx

Since I don't really know anything, please start with that in mind. Thanks!

sorry, to further clarify, I shared that link becuase it seems like a reasonable solution, but I prefer to get direction from you guys before I take that approach. I looked up the "WSUS how to move" because WSUS is 17 gb. Windows properties is 36 gb and Program Files Properties is 90 gb, those three folders account for most of the space usage, so figured WSUS was most likely candidate to address for a simple way to to do some storage freeeing.

If there is a better way to approach freeing up storage space, please let me know. That is the main thing I am after, simpliest way to solve my storage issue.

C drive is 235 gb and has 14.3 gb free.  C drive a one partition. This is a RAID 5 where 235 is C drive and 230gb is E drive.  E drive has 188gb free. C and E are really just partions of a 500gb RAID 5 in this server.  It is the C drive free space causing the alert.

I did read that EE article you gave.  I think I need to continue looking for answers here, as that article only led me to look at the C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles  and that is on 2gb, so I think I need to hunt down some larger files to move or delete to free up some space.

ArneLovius,. just now seeing your post, will check that, please idiot proof for me, how do I find the IIS logs and SQL database and WSUS cleanup and Exchange database logs?

I back up using the SBS backup tool to a separate internal HD and also use Acronis to make an image backup that is written to an external hd.
Presuming a default install of SBS 2008
IIS Logs are in C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles

To do a WSUS cleanup
Start | Admin Tools | Windows Server Update Services
Options | Server Cleanup Wizard

The Sharepoint databases are significantly more complex, and if you do risk breaking things in a way that could require a full restore from backup of the whole server if you do something wrong.

Start | All Programs | Microsoft SQL Server 2005 | SQL Server Management Studio Express
Connect with the string "\\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query" using Windows Authentication
Expand "Databases" then right click on each database, select tasks | shrink | files, then change Filetype "Data" to "Log" and post back to here what the size is and the free space for each database

Running the WSUS cleanup now...

The IIS logs...C, inetpub, logs folder is about 2gb. Do I just delete the files in that folder?

The SQL thing looks a bit scary so will leave that untouched for now.
Unless you need the logs, just delete them.

For a visual representation of what is taking up space on a volume I usually use WinDirStat http://windirstat.info/

WSUS server cleanup wizard is still running and according to the progress indicator, is only about 33% done.  Does that seem right?  It has been going over 2 hours now.

Now it has been about 3 hours. I hit the stop cleanup button about 10 minutes ago and it has not stopped, giving me an hour glass...

keeps telling me "the server cleanup wizard is stopping.  In a few moments you will be sent to the results pane where you can see what has been cleaned."...concerned that it is taking so long

how do I get it to stop? It has been 40 minutes since I hit cancel and still doing the same thing, when I hit "cancel" the window pops up to say it is "stopping" and it will send me to a results pane where i can see what has been cleaned....will it eventually stop, or is it hung?

Also, I have to leave in  a few minutes, so if I dont'' see your post, I'll be back in a couple hours and will look for it then.
I believe I looked for the process in task manager, I can't recall off the top of my head I remember it was acting the same way it is for you. I searched for resolutions and couldn't find any. I ended up restarting the server to be sure all the services associated with it were restarted.

Jeff the problem he's experiencing is the wizard locks up.
By the way, there is also a VERY good overview of how to recover even more space on the C: drive of your SBS 2008:

WORKS2011, from what I read, it was the WSUS Cleanup wizard which locked up.  I am referring to the MOVE DATA wizards unique to SBS.  These can be run before cleaning up the WSUS database --- moving the repository to another partition so there would then be more overhead for the Cleanup to run.

Hey guys, I just got back, still waiting on the wizard, so I decided to just restart the server. Hopefully that doesn't screw anythign up. I'll check back in about 20 minutes...
wfcrr,

Did you understand that I am not referring to the Clean Database Wizard, but instead the Move Data wizard?
