I concur with Drashiel Avira antivirus
We use AVG, works like a charm for many years already:

AVG 2012 Free version
In my point of view the best is Panda's free version of their Cloud Antivirus, as it uses the least resources on the PC, and, since it is running in the cloud, it tends to be more current with updates etc.

I've been using it since it was in beta a couple of years ago and never had issues yet.
Concur with the comments about Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you are going to insist on using "Freeware" (other than MSE), make sure that you are manually doing your updates and scans.

You really should be running '24/7 On-Access' protection on any system that touches the Internet, and most of the free stuff does not provide that.

Gizmo's Freeware (techsupportalert.com) has consistently provided me the best answers to the best freeware. They give a great amount of detail to help you make an inform decision.
