Cannot install software

I have just taken over a server from a previous person and I am having problems installing software.

If I extract the contents from a zip file the executable is not included in the extracted files. If I do the same on another computer all the files are extracted including the executable.

If I try and run any setup program I receive an error that I do not have the appropriate permission to access this item. See attachment.

I have McAfee 8.5 installed.

Does anyone have any idea of how to overcome this problem?

Disable McAfee temporarily to see if this app is causing the issue. I would think it is.
Have you got server admin rights?
Alternatively it looks very much like McAfee blocking it. Can you dissable McAfee and try it?

WARNING

Dissable McAfee at your own risk. Have you scanned the contents of the ZIP file with any other antivirus software? Is it from a reliable source?
Here is how to temp disable:

*Right click on the VShield icon in the system tray and choose "Virus Scan Console".
* Right click the entry for "Access Protection" and choose "Properties".
* Un-check the option for "Prevent McAfee services from being stopped" and click OK.
* The "Disable On-Access Scan" menu item should now be accessible when right-clicking the VShield icon.
Strongly second what Neilsr posted.

What is the file you are unizipping and what is the source of it?
@Robstg

Just a cautionary note....

As an "Expert" it is not good practice when somebody suspects that their AV Solution is blocking access to files in a ZIP to just say "Disable McAfee temporarily to see if this app is causing the issue"

What if the file contains a very malicious virus that takes down the server and wipes company sensitive information?

At the very least WARN of the danger and enquire if they trust the source,  advise virus scan on another machine etc. but NOT Dissable AV on server straight off.

Just friendly advice, good day :D
@ Neilsr

Point taken.

I am unzipping a file that was downloaded from APC's website. I have already extracted this and installed on another server.

I am logged in as Administrator. I've disabled the McAfee software but still cannot install any software.
I sit the exact same copy of the ZIP that you are tring to extract on the server that you used on the other machine? Not a copy or another download?
Its the same file
Is the machine a domain member? Is it a domain account or a local admin account your using?
Can you run ANY .exe at all on the server?

Where is Y: Drive? Local or a network share?
The Y drive is a network share. The account being used is a domain account. I receive the same message for any setup program e.g. adobe reader setup file
Also, can you copy the files/directory to the server you are trying to install it on?  It is possible that you don't have rights if the executable is sitting in on an other system, with a "read only" directory.

You also mentioned that you can't install ANY software - how many different software installs have you attempted?

Oh, and you should now re-enable your Anti-Virus. ;^)

What do you have in the event logs when you try and install?

Have you copied the install files locally and tried to run?
There is nothing in the event logs. I've copied the files locally and I still have the same issue.
So you get exactly the same error message except the path is different to the .exe file?

Is this a member server or a DC?

If a member server can you log in as a LOCAL MACHINE administrator, create a new one would be best, and then try the install from the local copy?

If that fails then I would start to look at doing several AV/AS/Malware scans with different scanners.
The server is in the domain controller container with another server. The other server I can install the software without any issue.

I am running an online scan from Sophos.
I got to the bottom of the issue. If I do a direct transfer via USB then install the application without any problems. My question is how did the previous IT company lock the server down
1. Internet Explorer cannot download software -  IE Administratin Kit ?
2. Strip executables out of zip files when transferred/copied from a network drive and not allow executables copied from a network share to be executed locally.

I would be interested in how this type of lockdown was carried out.
Using software restriction policies:

I mentioned this earlier.
