Windows 7 users are randomly getting a (filename.xls is locked for editing by '' or by 'another user') error when opening Office documents from a Novell file-share.
We have a number of Windows 7 users who randomly get a message telling them that the file is locked for editing by " or by 'another user' when they try to open Office documents from a Novell fileshare.
We have a mixed environment with Windows and Novell servers.
I have tried adding the dword EnableShareDenyNone (1) to the Office CLSIDs in HKCR and HKLM.
I do not think it is happening on Windows shares.
So far everyone with the issue have the most recent Novell Client. (as of last month)

not to sound redundant, but you sure that no-one else has the file open?

Fair question ;-)
The answer is pretty much. Normally when someone does it says "John Smith" has the file open.
In one case it is files that only one specific user has access to.

it is possible that the last person to have that particular file open, did not properly close it. Sometimes, if I have Excel, Word, or Access open, and just shutdown my pc for the day, that little temp file that MS is infamous for creating with these programs does not get removed, and causes this same issue.
Sometimes simply removing that temp file cures the issue, but of course... it just happens again when I do the same thing again...lol

Just lost a long post.
I apologize for not mentioning in my original questions that I checked for ~ temp files first thing.

Update:
I just remoted onto a user's computer and the file in question showed that she had it open.
Novell did not show the file as being open and there was no ~filename present on her Home share.

do you have McAffee AV installed?
"Issue: On Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 or 2008 server, sharing violations could occur when working with remote files while network drive scanning was enabled. This resulted in being denied access to files, or being unable to modify or save a file. (Reference: 447282)
Resolution: The Anti-Virus Filter driver has been updated to better handle potential sharing violations that could occur and avoid conflicts."

Thanks.
Thanks.
Hi,
I have the exact same problem.
Allso tried adding the dword EnableShareDenyNone (1) to the Office CLSIDs in HKCR and HKLM with no success.
I am sure that the file is not opened.

This has become less frequent.
It may have been an anti virus issue.
I will double check.
