An SMTP protocol error occurred

We have a few outgoing e-mail stuck in our queue to two different companies from different users.  We can receive e-mail from the companies but when we try to reply/send e-mail back to them we get "An SMTP protocol error occurred."  We are able to send and receive with others without issue.  We have tried contacting the companies to see if we are on a Blacklist or something but they have not been helpful. Any assistance offered would be appreciated.
