Backing up iMac to network location

Good afternoon all,

We have an iMac & we need to backup important data regurarly off the machine,

I'm not that clued up with Apple products, so bare with me.

I've been told to use a program called 'Time machine', however when i try and select a location it only lists the local HDD.

Ideally I want it to backup to one of our servers/shared drives.

Is there something I'm missing? Will I have to join it to the domain?

Thanks,

Is your server OS X or Windows based?  Do you have access to a share where you can dump the backup file?

Install the free version of CrashPlan ( http://www.crashplan.com ) on the back up server first.
Once installed Configure it.

1.)Click settings
2.) Click the configure button next to inbound backup from other computers.
3.) set the default back location to suitable folder on your server.

Save and exit.

Now download and install crashplan on your Mac... this time check existing account.
Enter the email and password you used when you set up the server.

Configure it.
1.)click destinations
2.) click computers
3.) select your server ( it will be listed)
4.) click start backup

DONE!

Repeat for every computer you want to back up.
Simply the best, and easiest local/remote backup available.
