Hi Sam:

Are we saying that you cannot start Windows to make a system state backup?  Perhaps we can help with the underlying issue of why Windows won't start?

Not sure you can do what you are wanting to do, but there are utilities that will make complete images of the drive then let you mount them to extract what you need.  Shadow Protect is one.

Here is a list of the recovery console commands: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true
Unfortunately; the copy command specifically says it does not support wildcards, subdirectories, or multiple files.  (Though the specifics say it can be a directory name)
So, try:
COPY C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG <Driveletter>:\REGBAK<enter>
and cross your fingers.  If it works, YEAH!
If it doesn't and you are comfortable with MD-Dos commands, go spend $4 for this: http://www.bootdisk.com/ntfs.htm (I've been using it for years)
Or you can try building a CD using this: http://www.diskinternals.com/boot-cd/

Fl_flyfishing ya I can't start Windows even in safe mode. The reason I want to safe registry is to restore share on D: drive... I have a utility to extract just the part in registry that contains the share info.

Don't follow.  The "share" is just a lable.  The data inside the folder, if it can be copied off or accessed, can be put on another computer or storage device and shared again.

Unless we are missing some part of this that we can't see from here.

Let say you have 100 shares in D: drive which were not crashed, only C: drive is reinstalled then because OS is reinstalled the shares are disappeared. How could you know where and which folder were shared before? Info is in registry...You see?

Ok, see about the problem.  Going to be a long weekend, I'm afraid.  I would clear the orphans and share everthing, setting security on the most critical stuff such as payroll, then spend the next week backing it down to need to know for the users and security groups.  No good to have a working system and no access for the users.
