Is it possible to create a mesh network with standalone cisco access points?

Hi, does anyone know if it's possible to create a mesh network with standalone Cisco Access Points?  We're trying to avoid having to swap out the recently installed standalone AP's for controller based ap's.  We are using Cisco Aironet 1040 series AP's.  Is it possible to create a mesh network with a software solution instead of having to buy an appliance controller?
Thank you.
