asked on

Installing an SSD in a Compaq NX7400?

Is that possible? Does it make sense?
I was thinking about a 120 GB one.

(The laptop already has 4 GB RAM, and also Win7 on it > I would clone the system partition to the SSD disk?).

Don't I need to update the BIOS or something? Or should I do this anyway?

And I wanted to use CloneZilla for the cloning (have used it before for similar, but non-SSD, tasks), would you not recommend it then?

Also I was wondering if the speed gains of SSD would be noticeable in such a quite old laptop?

You can update the BIOS. Also make sure the SSD has the newest firmware installed. I don't think CloneZilla will adapt properly so the SSD will run optimally. I usually also use that for normal cloning though. You should definitely notice the speed difference. The age of the laptop doesn't make much difference here.

Thanks so far, rindi!

But how would I install the newest firmware on the SSD? Connect it to the current laptop and update it via Win7?

So is there a free tool to correctly clone my current Windows to an SSD disk?

Ok for the speed difference then!

If you want optimal performance from your SSD drive DO NOT CLONE the drive as the way that information is written differs from HD and SSD.

Your SSD should come with all the necessary disks and drives.

Ah, ok ... so I would have to reinstall everything? But won't Windows then tell me that my licence has already been activated!?

i have not come across to be honest, you might have to give microsoft a quick call, although something tells me that you will be fine.

It depends on the manufacturer on how the firmware is updated. They usually have a utility for that. Maybe you can attach the SSD to a desktop as 2nd disk to check and update the firmware.

Paragon Partition Manager free should support SSD's:

I've checked the CloneZilla site and can't find any mention of it supporting HDD to SSD cloning, but maybe you should ask that on their forum.

Laptops Notebooks

A laptop or notebook is a portable personal computer with a clamshell form factor, suitable for mobile use. Although originally there was a distinction between laptops and notebooks, the former being bigger and heavier than the latter, there is often no longer any difference. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of settings, such as at work, in education, and for personal multimedia. A laptop combines the components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop computer, including the display screen, speakers, a keyboard, and pointing devices (such as a touchpad or trackpad) into a single unit. The device can be powered either from a rechargeable battery or by mains electricity from an AC adapter.
