Migration Assistant, reliability

How reliable is to use migration assistant if I want to switch from my Snow Leopard MacBook Pro (mid 2009) to Lion Macbook Pro (Retina)?

I've never had to use it myself but I've heard its ok.

Personally I would always take a backup first.  Just in case.
