No Internet connection after virus removal

I was helping a disabled friend to remove viruses from his computer. I updated his antivirus to AVG2012 and it detected several infections. After virus removal the computer was unable to acquire an IP address from the network.  When I checked the connection properties I was unable to check them all because there was a blank window containing a message to the effect that Windows could not display them because Windows  Management Instrumentation  was corrupted.

I used the XP SP3 installation CD and the command line:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection WBEM 132 %windir%\inf\wbemoc.inf
to rebuild the  WMI, and this was successful up to a point because I was then able to look at all of the connection properties.

But still no IP address acquisition!
The ADSL modem PC activity light is on and occasionally flickers.  The lights for DSL and Internet connection are on and steady.  But nothing comes back from the modem to the computer.

I would appreciate some help.

Thanks,

how about running the sfc /scannow command in a dos window? For example click the start button click run, then type cmd, press enter. This will replace corrupt OS files.
One other thing to check is go the the control panel click on internet options icon, then click on the connections tab, click on lan settings, if there is a check mark in the box "use a proxy server for your lan.... " Remove the check mark then click ok.
You referenced an ado connection, do you get an ip when connecting another system?
I.e. is the adsl adapter passes the public ip to the computer which might mean you need the pppoe app from the ISP to authenticate.
If your known working system is connected and gets a private ip, the windsock, tcp/ip stack reset might be in order as suggested
Netsh Is the command to use to reset windsock, tcp/ip.

Thanks ve3ofa, I did as you suggested because I did have the install media, but now the computer has frozen on the reboot.  I get the windows logo and "Please Wait" and nothing happens after that..
Have you tried a system restore to a time b4 the infection?
What Kind if of infections where cleaned?
Thanks to all.  i now have everything fixed. The viruses were Trojan Horse.Generics from a rootkit infection. The windows repair ultimately worked, even though it froze on the first reboot and i had to try again. The repair didnt fix the internet connection so I rebuilt the TCP/IP stack etc and that worked. I then got errors in IE and realised it was version 6 that had overwritten the IE 8. The errors were fixed when i installed IE 8.

Once again, many thanks.
