Memory Configuration
I am adding some new Memory to a Dell Poweredge 1900 running SBS 2003. It currently has 2Gb installed from 4 x 512Mb in slots 1,2,3 & 4.
I am adding a further 4Gb from 2 x 1Gb. I have installed these new memory sticks in slots 5 & 6.
When I boot the server I get a message saying the memory is not installed for optimal configuration. My question is:
Will 4Gb installed as above be better than 3Gb installed optimally?
Or what is the best install config for the memory I have?
Any answers much appreciated as always.
Thanks

I'd say that more memory is better than optimal memory configuration. More memory lets your programs keep more data in memory. More memory lets your OS keep more programs in memory.
Your OS can only address a max of 4GB, and of that nor all will be available as some of the address space gets eaten by other hardware address space. Normally you'll only be able to use something between 3 and 3.2 GB of RAM because of this. So there is not much point in having 4GB in that system. 3GB would probably be all you can use.
