How often does windows server backup 2008 create a full backup?

Hi,

We have an SBS 2011 with a scheduled windows server backup to run everyday.
What I would like to know, is how often does the Windows Backup create a Full backup instead of incremental? I haven't found any information about it anywhere..

hi

are you talking about two different servers here? A win2k8 and a 2k11?

on the link below you should find all the information you need for 2k8:

I am talking about small business server 2011.
I have read the above link already. There is only this quote, that mentions the full and incremental backup:
Automatic management of full and incremental backups. You no longer need to manage full and incremental backups. Instead, Windows Server Backup will, by default, create an incremental backup that behaves like a full backup. You can recover any item from a single backup, but the backup will only occupy space needed for an incremental backup. In addition, Windows Server Backup does not require user intervention to periodically delete older backups to free up disk space for newer backups—older backups are deleted automatically.

But there is no explanation of how often a full backup is made.
No information about it there too.. I see exactly the same screens.
You can schedule the backup there. But you can't decide when the backup will be full or incremental. It is being done automatically by windows.
That's what I'm searching. Some technical explanation of how this automation works.

I'll explain you why I ask this:
The SBS is a virtual machine running on a vmware ESXi, and besides the Windows Backup, we also run Veeam backup of the SBS VM daily.
Now, everything running as it should, the Windows Backup is making it's job, then after a few hours the Veeam backup is running.
But, if the Windows Backup decides to make a full backup, it takes about full day, during which the Veeam backup fails because it can't take the VSS snapshot, because it's taken by the Windows Backup.
I hope you understand the problem now.

That's about modifying the schedule date and time.

Anything else?

SBS 2011, just like SBS 2008, includes a backup wizard that is integrated into the SBS console for the purpose of allowing administrators to quickly create a robust backup/restore strategy without requiring them to have prior experience in Windows backup technology. It’s a simple custom interface that calls upon the native Windows Server Backup utility to do its work while keeping much of the underlying complexity in the background. In particular, it's designed to give the administrator no choice but to configure a recurring backup job that will perform a full backup of all critical volumes that is Bare Metal Recovery capable. At the same time, it allows you to select any additional data drives that you wish to include in the job.  If you have Exchange, Sharepoint, or SQL data on any of the drives you select, that data will be backed up as well.  In fact, with the exception of the default daily backup schedule (12:00pm and 11:00pm instead of 5:00pm and 11:00pm), the flow of the wizard and its options are identical to what they were in SBS 2008. For more details you can read our previous post on the SBS Backup Wizard.
SBS2011 creates a full backup when a) there is no initial seed available on the backup destination or 2) when it needs to collapse the older backups into the initial seed. Unfortunately, there is no way I am aware of that specify the grandfather-father-son scenario as in regular 3rd party or other backup solutions
