Need help merging from excel into word document

Using office 2003 running on xp. Im trying to merge data from a excel SS to a word doc. The issue Im having is the column Im importing from excel is formated as accounting so it adds the $ symbol and the , and decimal points. When I merge the data over to a word doc it doesnt come over with the $ , or . so in excel its $36,000.00 but it merges as 36000.. How can I get it so it comes over with the symbols?
