Can I just use SEP or do I need Symantec Mail Security

I recently purchased a new server for our small business with you guessed it SBS 2011.  The company I purchased this with also sold us SEP for virus protection.

However,  when I went to purchase an additional licence they (I spoke to a different person) came back saying that this would not cover the emails and we now need to upgrade to SYMC PROTECTION SUITE ADVANCED BUSINESS EDITION.  I am a little confused because this is only a month later and we purchased a 12 month subscription to begin with to be told now that we need to upgrade when they speced the server and new we had exchange.

What do we actually need (the company is only about 15 people)?

Do we need Symantec Mail Security or SYMC PROTECTION SUITE ADVANCED BUSINESS EDITION  and been missed sold in the first place.   Or are we protected just using Symantect Endpoint  Protection for Small Business Server and they just want to get more money out of us?

SEP alone will not protect your mail server from SPAM and virus emails.
You need Symantec Mail security to protect your Exchange email server.

So if I just understand this correctly,  I need

Symantec Mail Security on the SBS 2011 server I do not need SEP installing on the server.

Then on all the clients (Windows 7 )  I need to install SEP?

So If I already have the SEP licences I do not need to upgrade these to SYMC PROTECTION SUITE ADVANCED BUSINESS EDITION? What is this by the way?
You will have to install both SEP and Mail security on the server. SEP will protect from viruses affecting the file system and Memory, Mail security will protect your Mail server.
On the clients you need of course to install SEP.

You need also to install SEP Manager to control your SEP clients (this does not nees any additional license, it comes with the SEP license)

You need to upgrade your license to:
http://www.symantec.com/protection-suite-small-business-edition

This is both SEP and mail security for SBS.

Sorry I just want to make this absolutly clear before I go back and have a go at the reseller for selling me the wrong thing in the first place, and thanks for your help in advance.

I already have SEP Manager on the server and SEP on the Server and 10 Clients, if I want to be properley protected you are saying this is not the correct setup?

Just so I am clear you are saying I need

SEP Manager on the Server and  then protection-suite for SBS installed on the Server as well as the 10 clients.

You are also saying I will need Mail Security on the server or will the protection-suite not include this?
ok,
You need 2 things:
1- SEP
2- Mail security

Protection suite is a combination of both. If you upgrade your license to Protection suite it includes Mail security.
The mail server is an SEP client to your SEP Manager, and then you install on top of that Mail security which is a separate component.

Hope this clarifies.

Sorry I must be having a really blonde moment,  I get the desktop clients ok that they just need there licences upgrading.

I am just confussed on the server (it was a very long weekend).

The server (SBS with all components installed)  has SEP manager installed and also SEP client.  Do I just need to upgrade its licence also to Protection suite or just install a seperate product called mail security?

Also on the clients do they need additional software installing or just there licence upgrading?

Told you it was a blonde moment
You may also like to speak to the sales representative or the symantec partner to get only the Mail Security from Symantec.

You already have SEP for server and clients you just need Mail Security.
Q- The server (SBS with all components installed)  has SEP manager installed and also SEP client.  Do I just need to upgrade its licence also to Protection suite or just install a seperate product called mail security?
A- When you upgrade to protection suite you get the license for Mail security

Q- Also on the clients do they need additional software installing or just there licence upgrading?
A- Nothing is needed on the client side.

Ok sorry light bulb has just gone on

So I need 11 licenses 1 for each of the 10 clients and then one for the server?

Then I just need to install the mail security component ontop of the server?  Does this need a new SEP manager installing or will this be fine as it is?
You are correct.
No need to install another SEP manager. Mail security is a stand-alone product.

last question and thanks for your help.

I assume I am just paying for the licences and I can download the Mail Secuirty then free from Symantec's website or download link they send me
yes, once you receive the license key for the Protection suite, you will be able to download mail security.

Good luck
