Classic ASP getting the result f an SQL Server function

I have a legacy system built in classic ASP.

I have a requirement to create a new 'Job Reference' for one of the order tables.

I have created an SQL function that does this. (It reads the current value from a table, adds one to it and writes the new value back to the table)

How do call the function from ASP and put the returned 'Job Reference' into a VBScript variable for use later?

If this is not possible, is there an alternative?
