windows flicks

A colleague asked me to check why his DELL studio laptop does not boot Windows 7 Home Premium anymore. He said he did not install anything recently.
Windows boots until it shows the loading screen with flowers and birds, and then it the screen starts flicking about couple times a second. I can move the mouse cursor, but it seems the cursor image is corrupted somehow.
It boots fine in the safe mode though.
I tried the following:
1) Checked for viruses using a LiveCD from AVG. I had found 7 trojans, I have deleted them.
2) Checked the filesystem on boot. It found some errors, says it has fixed them.
3) Executed the command: "sfc /scannow". It said nothing was corrupted
4) Tried the Repair Your Computer from the F8 menu. It said nothing wrong was found.
5) Using msconfig disabled all the services and autoload software
6) Ran the DELL diagnostic utility. It says the hardware is fine.
7) Removed and put back the battery.

What else I can try (except reinstall the OS)?

A similar issue is described here http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/934231-windows-boot-up-flickering-screen.html but there is no solution.

-run mbam : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
- run chkdsk again - it should find no more errors
- check the event viewer for errors
- do a system restore if the problem is recent

Thank you for the advises,
Unfortunately, I can't install the malwarebytes, since the installer does not work in the safemode. Is there any good malware remover shipped on a LiveCD?
The event viewer did not have anything related errors, except the fact the PC was rebooted brutally after it hanged.
The system restore does not work. It says it damaged or something, I think because the LiveCD antivirus removed some files from it.
I asked to perform the check disk again, and now windows does not boot at all. :(
It hangs after all the drivers are loaded. But I guess the checkdisk is working but there's no output. Too bad I have interrupted it before by the power button...

no all malware removers work best when running from normal install -not from safe mode

you should never interrupt chkdisk  by powering off

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed to extract the file (....BabylonToolbarsrv.exe) from the restore point.
The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

The link to download does not work.

Once I tried to load the normal mode, it started flicking again. I closed the lid and waited for a while and then saw a message about LogonUI.exe process failure. The file looks legit (at least it's date matches all other files).

Can I use a recovery CD prepared on some other PC (and it's not a Home Premium, it's an Ultimate)?

Thank you for the links. I used this utility to make an universal W7 installer. But that did not help. Each time I run the system repair (either, from the F8 menu, or from the recovery CD, or from the installation DVD) it says there no problem was detected.
I've decided to restore the original system using the DELL DataSafe utility.
