Brother DCP-585CW Paper Jam Error
We are currently having a little trouble with the above printer. Prior to it's disassembly we printed a few test pages as the black ink was not printing very clearly. After the second test page the black ink was not visible at all. Now that we have cleaned the underside of the carriage which had a few blobs of ink and a couple of smears, we've put the printer back together and it seems to think that there is now a paper jam? I've made double sure that there is no jam and as it was printing before hand it makes sense that something else is causing this. I do have the disassembly guide from Brother themselves which I have followed to the word. Although I've taken it apart several times to check again, the printer still says there is a paper jam.

It would appear that you have assembled the printer with one of the paper flags either broken or jammed in the wrong position. Paper flags are little hinged pieces of (usually black) plastic that are pushed out of the way by passing paper. There are several of them at various places in the paper path. If one is broken off or stuck in the wrong position, the printer interprets that as if paper is present at that flag, and hence thinks it has a jam.

You'll need to disassemble the printer again, and check those flags. The disassembly guide should show you where they are.

It is possible that one may have broken off during disassembly, what would be the best course of action if this were so?

Buy a new one from Brother - that's if they sell them separately. It's also possible they will say you need to buy the whole subassembly instead of just the flag.

First find out which one it is (if my guess is correct) and then contact Brother.

More by luck than judgement I saw a small code on the encoder strip and it just seemed to click that it's possible the encoder strip needs to be a specific way round. Experience tells me you cannot assign a variable by: 25=x; So what if the encoder strip was the wrong way around? This solved the problem.

A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similar physical media. Traditional printers are being used more for special purposes, like printing photographs or artwork, and are no longer a must-have peripheral; 3D printing has become an area of intense interest, allowing the creation of physical objects. An image scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Hand-held scanners, where the device is moved by hand, have evolved from text scanning "wands" to 3D scanners used for industrial design, reverse engineering, test and measurement, orthotics, gaming and other applications.
