Outlook 2003 will not connect to exchange server

I lost the network connection, the plug came loose, now I can not get Outlook to reconnect to the exchange server. This also happened on anotrher machine after the switch was accedenally unplugged.

Can you ping the Exchange server from the client using IP and name?

yes and the internet works fine just can not connect in outlook, otherwise the computer is accessing all network resources
Perhaps Outlook did not reconnect automatically to the Exchange server. Open Outlook, check the lower right corner of the Outlook window. Right-Click and select the appropriate option.

It worked with the new profile however it also now woks with the other machine.  It seems like it took an hour or so and then was able to connect again.  They are working now but I did nothing to fix it and how do I tell what is happening and how to troubleshoot and figure out how to fix it quicker then a hour. 1 hour without email is unacceptable there must be a way to force the connection.
Have a look at the Application/Security Windows Logs on both client and server to search for any useful warnings/errors that might give you suggestions.
