asked on

restrict dhcp scope on Cisco 2620 router

We have an old Cisco 2620 XM router with the wrong version of firmware to create ISL links.  We are installing an Avaya IP Office VOIP system which has to use its own DHCP Server.  Is there a way on my routers DHCP server to exclude the Avaya phones, possibly by MAC address so that I can have 2 dhcp servers on one subnet

I tried multiple VLANS my problem is the router does not have IP advanced firmware without that I cannot create the sub intervafaces I need for ISL trunking between the switch and the router.  Can you explan more how to add the 242 option on the cisco router.

what IOS version are you running ?
what interface are you trying to create the ISL link on ?
what model switch is it ?

IOS is version 12.3 on the 2620xm router.  That is the issue not the switch. I can create the VLANS and trunk port on the switch. I can create the sub interfaces on the router. However when I enter 'encapsulation ISL' I get an invalid command error. I verifed we only have bridging firmware and you have to have at least IP based in order to create the ISL links. The router is EOL so I cannot download new firmware.

aaah, you might not have ISL, but you should have dot1Q

you would need the switch to support 802.1q as well...

I've requested that this question be deleted for the following reason:

I was not able to accomplish using a separate dhcp server for the avaya phones.

dot1q is available on IPBase on 12.3

I would go with either accepting 38177381 as the solution and 38178960 as an assist, or as a delete with no refund.
Routers
Routers

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. The most familiar type of routers are home and small office cable or DSL routers that simply pass data, such as web pages, email, IM, and videos between computers and the Internet. More sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone. Though routers are typically dedicated hardware devices, use of software-based routers has grown increasingly common.
