Cannot initialize WD My Book Essential 3TB HDD

I have a Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB hard drive that I cannot mount or initialize. I have tried several things from changing the cable, removing the drive from the casing and hooking it up directly through SATA, tried multiple recovery tools found <Admin Edit> but so far I haven't had any luck. I attached a couple screenshots that show what happens when I try to initialize the disk.

Western Digital has diagnostics on their web site, but it sure sounds like you have a bad drive there.  I presume it is still under Warranty - I'd probably just return it.  

I tend to stay away from drives over 2TB because your older Windows operating systems will not support them.

WD's external drives usually come with WDSmartWare. This software allows you to check the HDD. Did you consider WSmartWare and run some tests in order to be sure the HDD (and the cable) is running fine?

I verified the cable is functional, I have tried running the several tools available on the WD website but none find the drive with the exception of the firmware utility (which sees the drive but cannot update the firmware).
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

Kindly report OS version and architecture. Thank you.

Well, if you tried on 2 OSes and on different hardware (W7 in on one box and Ubuntu is on another, isn't it?) and you fail on both, I'd say you could make a third test on a third OS (Vista?) and third hardware. If this third test fails, I would suspect there's something wrong with the WD.

I am going to try this drive in another machine just in case. dlethe, it is a 3TB drive full of important data that I am not giving up on that easy. Push comes to shove I will have drive savers attempt to recover the data, it's worth the $700 to me.

i doubt you'll have success, since it reports it's an i/o problem which is blocking the disk access.
i fear the data  recovery option is your only true help here

note :  i have not used one of these personally, but gillware has a very good reputation

ITNC - Only so much you can do, and you need to remember that every second it is powered on could make things much worse.  When a HDD behaves as you describe then you have no way of knowing if there are tiny bits of ferromagnetic material flying around at 7200 RPM smashing into the media.  

Pay the money unless you have a bunny suit and a recovery lab and a lot of test equipment and time.  Only so much you can do yourself and you are absolutely risking further data loss.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

Trying to mount initialize it will fail as Windows fails to see the actual structure of the drive at all. When you connect this drive to your Windows 7 machine does the BIOS of machine see this drive?

By the way, if you cannibalize that 3TB disk and put it behind another USB bridge then you run a very high risk that the bridge won't be compatible with that disk to begin with.  A USB->SATA converter changes the protocol and instruction set from ATA to SCSI.

These $2.00 chips work great as long as the # of blocks can fit in 32 bits, after that you need to redesign the chip and use another family of SCSI commands that are all 16 bytes long instead of just 10.

So just to make sure your problem is NOT a SCSI incompatibility, use a native SATA controller card that specifically mentions it supports disks > 2.09 TB (Which is the most you can address with FFFFFFFF x 512 bytes.    

If this is an "Advanced format drive" with 4KB sectoring, then you also run into a similar but different issue.  Again solution is to make sure your SATA controller can deal with that.

Sorry about not thinking of this earlier.  I just bought my first WD advanced formatted drive 2 days ago and didn't know how poorly support was for them.
