Replace iPhone 3gs battery while preventing error 29

Hey Experts!  I upgraded to the 4s at the beginning of the year and retired my work-horse 3gs.  I thought I left it in my desk at work except when I went to get it, it wasn't there.  Turns out I left it in the glove-box in my car and the battery has inflated to the point that I thought it was going to burst.  I opened the phone up and found the APN on the battery.  After a quick search online, I found a replacement battery along with several knock-offs.  Here is my question.  I found a discussion about using the wrong battery which causes your phone to have an error 29.  If I buy a knock-off battery, will I encounter this error or can I use any battery as long as it's compatible with APN # 616-0431?

I've never replaced a battery on an Apple phone so I'm at your mercy.  Thanks for your time and guidance.

I did not have a problem when I changed mine a year or so ago.

Thanks for the reply.  Can you expand on that a little as in did you use an OEM or knock-off battery?  Did you have the 3gs?  Have you upgraded to the latest iOS?  Do you remember which battery APN you had?  According to the link provided above, the APN of the battery makes a difference (or it did at that time).

Thanks again!

Ok.  Thanks for the information and quick response!  Working on the points now.
Don't give me any!
Are you serious alanhardisty?  Your post added to the solution.
Really?  How?

Quite happy to not get points, but won't argue with you if you do give me some.

Alan :)
Thanks gents.  I will proceed with the battery replacement accordingly.

I went with split points as anyone that reads this question will benefit from the two posts I accepted.  At least that was my view.  :)

Take care guys!  I hope to work with you again in the near future.
Good luck.  Hope the replacement goes well and thanks for the points.
