Backup Exec Cannot Access CIFS Shares on Netapp after ONTAP Upgrade to 8.1
My backup jobs are failing to backup CIFS shares since we upgraded our Netapp FAS3140 to ONTAP version 8.1. They were working prior to the upgrade when we were on 7.3.4. We are backing up the CIFS shares directly and are not using NDMP (no plans to do that either). Both Symantec and Netapp are not providing much help. The system logon account used in Backup Exec is a domain admin account and can access all of the shares through Windows Explorer.

When browsing the Netapp from a Backup Exec backup job I get the following error: "Browse Failure. A network connection to the server could not be established." I have tried using both the name and IP address. Thanks!

paulsolov - When I turned on CIFS auditing I never saw any activity at the filer prompt when trying to browse from the backup exec server. I also added my backup user account to the Backup Operators group on the Netapp and that did not help either.

prashant9885 - The filer was added in this fashion... \\192.168.1.1. I also added the machine to the hosts file even though name resolution doesn't come into play. No luck.

Thanks guys! Any more ideas?

You may have to disable NDMP on the filer to backup CIFS share. Else change NDMP port

NDMP is disabled. We only turned it on temporarily for testing.

You are able to access the share through windows explorer, where the account used is the account you logged on with. Are you logged into the backup server using backup exec system account (which is part of domain) or any other account.

can you logon (RDP) to backup exec media server using system account and check if you would be able to access the shares.

Try if you can add system account to local administrators group in filer.

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.
