ACT 2011 running slow across network

I'm working on a Sage ACT 2011 performance problem. This is a 2 person office that is sharing the ACT database. On the system that is accessing the database over the network, ACT is very slow in accessing & updating records, mainly in the afternoon. The only other apps running are Outlook & IE. But this problem will still happen even with these other apps closed.

I  have done the usual defraging both machines, scanning for spyware & virus', chkdsk, & checking the network speed between the 2 systems. Everything is clean, defragged, & fine.

The 2 systems are:
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - newest & contains the database
Windows Vista - workstation
Both are up to date for Windows, Office, & ACT.

Does anyone else have any suggestions to find out what's slowing down access to the ACT database? The person using the Windows 7 that contains the database has also complain that it has been slow on occasions, so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the network.

Thanks!

Thanks GLComputing! Those are some great suggestions. I have done some of these but not combine with both systems. I'll be reporting back.

Actually the updates seem to have corrected the issue. Both computers have been running this version of Act since it was released & this slowness just started. I'm surprised at all of the patches Sage has released to fix things. Almost as bad as MS!!

Thanks for the help!!
Sadly, many of them are because of the dependence on MS technologies :-(
