Windows 7/64 update not running - says service is not running but it is

Hello Experts,

So I try to run windows update from the start menu and when I  click on "Check for Updates" I get the following message:

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running.  You may need to restart your computer.

Of course, restarting the computer doesn't fix it or I wouldn't be posting this message.   I looked in the services list in Control Panel and see that the Windows Update service is indeed running.  I tried restarting it then stopping and starting it, with no change.

Any assistance appreciated.

    Accepted Solution

    Stop the Windows Update Service
    Stop the BITS Service
Rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old
    Rename the C:\Windows\Windowsupdates.log to windowsupdate.log.old
    Start the BITS service
    Start the Windows Update Service

    Try again.

Of course!  How silly of me not to try that first...

Seriously, it worked great, one step missing - reboot the machine.

    Thanks thanks thanks

I took multiple steps before trying this: they didn't fix the problem.

Thank you, this worked for me. Markdolar is correct, a reboot is needed.

If someone can explain why Windows would detect that the Windows Update is not running while it actually is would be great; just out of curiousity.
