Windows 7/64 update not running - says service is not running but it is
Hello Experts,
So I try to run windows update from the start menu and when I click on "Check for Updates" I get the following message:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
Of course, restarting the computer doesn't fix it or I wouldn't be posting this message. I looked in the services list in Control Panel and see that the Windows Update service is indeed running. I tried restarting it then stopping and starting it, with no change.
Any assistance appreciated.

Wow
I took multiple steps before trying this: they didn't fix the problem.
Thank you, this worked for me. Markdolar is correct, a reboot is needed.
If someone can explain why Windows would detect that the Windows Update is not running while it actually is would be great; just out of curiousity.
