I took multiple steps before trying this: they didn't fix the problem.<br />

Thank you, this worked for me. Markdolar is correct, a reboot is needed.<br />

If someone can explain why Windows would detect that the Windows Update is not running while it actually is would be great; just out of curiousity.

So I try to run windows update from the start menu and when I &nbsp;click on &quot;Check for Updates&quot; I get the following message:<br />

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. &nbsp;You may need to restart your computer.<br />
<br />
Of course, restarting the computer doesn't fix it or I wouldn't be posting this message. &nbsp; I looked in the services list in Control Panel and see that the Windows Update service is indeed running. &nbsp;I tried restarting it then stopping and starting it, with no change.<br />

Any assistance appreciated.

Of course, restarting the computer doesn't fix it or I wouldn't be posting this message.   I looked in the services list in Control Panel and see that the Windows Update service is indeed running.  I tried restarting it then stopping and starting it, with no change.

Any assistance appreciated.
