I have made a copy of the Enterprise Wiki page layout and added 2 web part zones. One under the quicklaunch, and one under the main content area. No matter what I do, though, I can't get the copy to load on an Enterprise Wiki site. Has anyone successfully done this?

Hello,
have you checked in the page layout as a major version? You may also need to approve it, depending on your site settings.

Then edit an exisiting Enterprise Wiki page and on the Page ribbon select the layout drop-down. The new layout should be listed there.

I did check in the page layout as a major version, and approved it.

I don't see a layout drop-down on the ribbon; the attached file is what I see:

Is there any way to replace the default Enterprise Wiki page layout that all wiki sites use without changing the original?

Prepare for your VMware VCP6-DCV exam.

After you have published the page layout, go the the site where you want to see it. Then click Site Actions > Site Settings > Page Layouts and Site Templates.

If the option "This Site Can Only Use the Following Layout" is selected, you need to add the new page layout to the allowed layouts. You can also remove any undesired page layouts you don't want people to use.

In the third section tick "Select the Default Page Layout" and selelct it in the box.

I have already done this, but it only applies to new pages, not existing ones. Also, the new layout doesn't show up when I create new pages, even with this setting.

Edit an existing page. On the Page tab, select the Page Layout drop down and select the desired page layout.

When you create a new page via the Documents ribbon, select "Enterprise Wiki Page". This is a content type, to which page layouts can be applied. Page layouts don't appear in this drop down. The default page layout will be applied by, ehrmm, default. But it can be changed as per above.

The default page layout is set via Site Actions > Site Settings > Page layouts and site templates

I don't have page layouts as an option on the page tab of the ribbon. Could that be because my installation is on a Sharepoint Foundation server? Is it possible to add buttons to the ribbon in Sharepoint like you can in Office?

Let's start over.

Enterprise Wiki is a site template that is not available in Foundation. It requires the Publishing infrastructure that is only included in SharePoint Server Enterprise.

What you have is probably a Wiki Page  Library in a Foundation site. These are similar in look and behaviour, but you cannot set page layouts for them.

There is also no option to add buttons to the ribbon to create that functionality. The only way to get it is to upgrade your license to the Enterprise version.

In a Wiki Page, you can select from several text layouts on the "Format Text" ribbon and add web parts to these layout zones.

You can customise and brand wiki pages as described in this article:
