Movie Maker from Windows Essentials 2012 wont start on windows 7

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit box, with latest widow’s updates, and graphic drivers.

Windows Essentials 2012 has just been installed, and movie maker won’t run. See attached file "movie maker.jpg" for error box.

I ran a dxdiag.exe and found that the DDI version is 9Ex,  see "dxdiag.exe " attached pic.

I believe this should be 10x for windows 7.

How do I correct this?

Your video card comes stock with 512Mb Memory which today is about 1/2 of what you should have, your Graphics card is over 6 years old.  You have the latest driver from

A 7900 GTX is just too old to meet the minimum requirements.  A $100 video card should fit the bill: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-2.html

Callandor & ve3ofa .. I know the card is old, but it is not being used for gameing.

Why would that make it show up as DDI version is 9Ex?

It talking to the owner of the PC I know they have tried to installed directx 9c on it.. it failed as I would exspect. But then I look and see DDI version is 9Ex. Could part of it have been be installed?

Windows 7 provides DirectX11, not 10.  The 9Ex version is what dxdiag says your card supports, and the 7900 GTX will support up to 9.0c.

Windows Photo Gallery and Movie Maker require some features of DirectX 10, which might be installed for you if they're not found on your computer.

The video card does not support DX 10 only DX9
