Mail not flowing from 2010 to 2003

Mail not flowing from 2010 to 2003

Hi all I am practicing doing a transition from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010. I am at the point where I am in coexistence, but mail is not flowing from users on 2010 to users on 2003. I have created a Routing Group Connector by running the New-RoutingGroupConnector command, but still no luck. I know when the first hub is introduced to the domain, a RGC is created automatically. I deleted that one as mail was not flowing with it in place either, so I removed it and created the new one. I looked in the Queue Viewer and there is nothing there. Emails leave outlook and return no detailed except after a day or so I get a delayed delivery message.

Delivery is delayed to these recipients or groups:

    03 rambo (03_rambo@specops.com)

Subject: test from 10 to 03

This message hasn't been delivered yet. Delivery will continue to be attempted.

The server will keep trying to deliver this message for the next 1 days, 2 hours and 17 minutes. You'll be notified if the message can't be delivered by that time.

Are both Exchange 2003 and 2010 working fine ?
Do they have DNS entries ?
Is the mail not flowing both ways or just from one way to another ?
Check if you can Telnet and drop an email ?

Thanks for the response, but I did initially create the RGC with the bidirectional option, which is why I am so puzzled. This is not my first transition from 03 to 10, and usually in the past for me, the auto created RGC that is created when the first HUB Transport server is introduced to the domain, has been enough to facilitate mail flow in both directions.
OK so, does the mail flow from 03 to 10?

Can your E2010 box telnet across to E2003 box?

Regards,
Exchange_Geek
As mentioned in my initial post, mail flows fine from 03 to 2010, just not from 10 to 2003. I was able to telnet to the E2003 box, see results

New note: I think the issue is bigger than I thought, I figured I would test mail flow between two 2010 mailbox users. The mail is not flowing between them either.
Let me go back a bit.... I am starting to think this maybe as a result of the OAB being moved to the 2010 mailbox server while there are still users on 03. I moved it because I followed the deployment wizard on Microsoft's site. I did read somewhere where someone mentioned not to move the OAB until ALL users have been moved to 2010. Could this be why mail is not flowing?
Oh I forgot to mention, when the email is sent via telnet to the 03 and 10 users, they get them. Both 03 and 10 users are not getting the emails when sent from owa or outlook.
OAB has nothing to do with mail flow at all.

Regards,
Exchange_Geek
SO you say if you drop email via Telnet user receives it .... not via Outlook or OWA both ways ?
If so possible RGC issue. Do we have Send connector with smart host ?

I think the issue is bigger than I thought, I figured I would test mail flow between two 2010 mailbox users

So, you are able to send emails from E2k3 to E2k10.
You are not able to send emails from E2k10 to E2k3
You are not able to send emails between mailboxes on E2k10

How about you track those messages and provide details?

Get-MessageTrackinglog -Server "E2k10 hub server -sender "Email address of sender" -Recipients "email address of recipient" | FL

This is getting worse, now mail is stuck in the draft folder of the 10 users when sending from OWA. If sent from outlook, the emails are not stuck in draft folder, the users just don't get them. So, this is where things stand
Mail NOT flowing between 2010 and 2003 if sent from OWA or Outlook, flows well if sent from Telnet
Mail NOT flowing between 2010 and 2010 if sent from OWA or Outlook, flows well if sent from Telnet
Mail stuck in Drafts folder if being sent from OWA, not stuck if sent from Outlook
Mail is flowing fine from 2003 to 2010 and from 2003 to 2003
If not try to restart the Server.

Connector used is "Intra-Organization SMTP Send Connector" ??

- Rancy
Yeah I noticed that and had the same scratching my head response. I ran the Get-SendConnector and got: [PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-sendconnector
Creating a new session for implicit remoting of "Get-SendConnector" command...

Identity                                AddressSpaces                           Enabled
--------                                -------------                           -------
out to internet                         {SMTP:*;1}                              True

That is the connector from the 2003 server. I tried creating a new send connector [internal] but it wanted a smart host. Not sure if I was supposed to use the hub transport server as a smart host. So, should I create a custom one instead, or do I need to create one at all? as for that connector that report indicated, I do not see that in the EMC at all.
Nope we dont need any Send connector when working internally only RGC should be it ....

Can you do tracking on E2k3 for the E2k3 user ?
Do we have any Firewall in between ?
Check for any errors on the E2k10 and E2k3 servers for transport ?

- Rancy
There are no firewalls in place and when I check the message tracking on the 03 server I get what you see in the screenshot. I do not see anything in the queue viewer.

LOL, it is amazing how we sometimes forget to check the simplest things. I just added the product key to my server, so it prompted me to restart the Information Store service for the change to take effect. While scrolling thru the various services....low and behold, the Exchange Mail Submission and the Exchange Mailbox Assistants services had not started......duh, the light turned on. I started them, and the walls came tumbling down, mail was flowing like river thru Jordan. Thanks for all the help guys.
Guys I am such a bozo, I totally missed some of the replies you both gave. It was in going thru the points awarding process I saw where both of you mentioned checking the service. I hope I was fair with the points awarded. A thousand thanks to both of you.
No worries .... Everyone makes silly mistakes .... what ends well is always well.
