My goal is to ping a machine from germany to australia, but the machine I want to ping is sitting behind a router, hence has a private address. How can I ping the machine. Germany vm ip =

You will have problems with this as the router doesn't know where to send the ping to as it is sent to the PUBLIC ip address and unless the router is configured to send all ping packets to a particular machine then it will fail.. also icmp packets must be allowed through the firewall of the receiving computer. it is turned off by default on windows servers.

So unless you can configure the router or setup a vpn between the two computers then your stuck at only being able to ping the router.
