microsoft lync 2010

I have a client who need to take out one of their lync server, they have two in total, apart from online lync chat software, they dont want to use this for anything else, they have load balancer, but i am not sure if its being used or not.
so what should i do to take out one lync server, without affecting the users or to their network? what things i need to check, and where do i have to make changes?

thanks.

You surely need to transfer any role performed ..... i would say Transfer roles and check this server is not listed for any actions to perform or Care-taker. Than simply stop the Lync services on the server for a week and make sure everything works fine.

Once done run the (Lync BPA to check Lync environment is GOOD). You can always run this too keep a check that the Lync environment is working good

They have two lync servers, so they want to take out the secondary server.

how can i check if its second Lync introduced or the first?

i know which server is front end server.

i have followed the links that you provided, thanks for that, but in those links it shows how to completely take down lync server, although i just want to take down the secondary lync server.
They are running load balancer, but the only thing they want to use is chat on lync.

i was under topolgy builder, and the only instance i find for lync02 server was under Edge
Pools. under that the General settings, next hop selection, and external settings are defined.....so do i have to transfer those under lync01? if yes then how?
thanks.
Check which server performs the Lync requests chat requests .... if currently they both are in Load balance then both perform all requests simultaneously.

so how can i check which server performs the chat requests?
The client tool points to the LYNC server it connects to full-fill its requests,

You will have to check for Lync eventID not sure of the eventid though

I went through Lync Server event log, and the only event i found which was referencing to lync02 server was

Event Id: 41024

Lost connection to the Web Conferencing Edge Server

Edge Server Machine FQDN: lyn02.domain.com.au

Cause: Service may be unavailable or Network connectivity may have been compromised.
Is Lync02 Edge server or Lync01 ?
What if you stop Lync02 services do users face issue ?

lync01 is the main server, when i log on to lync 02, under MS Lync Server 2010, the only things i see are Lync server deployment wizard, lync server logging tool, and lync server management shell.
on lync01 i see lync serer control panel, deployment wizard, logging tool, management shell, toplogy builder.
so what i have done on topolgy builder is under standard edition front end servers, i have gone to properties, and i have unticked associate edge pool, where lync02 name was referenced. i will shut down lync 02 server and will see what happens...

i have been told that when they lync02 server is restarted the external communication to users go down.....the internal communication is fine.

external communication means when they try to communicate anyone outside like on msn, who have a valid email address, that goes offline as soon as lync02 goes down....

so where do i have to check for this?
External Connection goes down cause Lync02 is EDGE server meaning that it processes all External requests .... so why not try and get that role to Lync01.

I guess the same location where you see Lync02.

yes, thats what needs to be done, the external requests needs to be forwarded to lync01.

is there any way possible to assign that role to lync01? or do i have to go through edge server installation? i have installed a screen shot of it....i have started the wizard under topolgy from standard edition front end....its saying do i want to use the same or different FQDNs, IP, SIP Web Conf, and would it be used for federation? and ports for IP, internal and external?

i right click on edge pools, and i selected new edge pools, and on the first screen when i enter fqdn name for lync01 server, it says its already used in this topology.

Maybe its already setup .... just try one thing end the setup and see if you could add Lync01 on the EDGE pool.

Do i have to add any certificates on lync01 server?
because this is going to be edge server, hopefully :-)
Check for certs on Lync02 ... it should have as its enabling users to connect from External
