equivalent of roxio burn - in freeware

this tool has an icon on the desktop and with that you are copy CD/DVD. the big advantage is that you dont have to save an image first before you start the copy- it is all done in memory.

would you know of and recommend any freeware that can do this?

25112--I use ImgBurn
http://imgburn.com/  You can pin it to Taskbar.

Concerning your statement about Roxio "the big advantage is that you dont have to save an image first before you start the copy":  I am not at all sure that is correct.  The Roxio icon does appear when you insert a CD/DVD, but you still have to have a file on your hard drive to burn it.  Having ImgBurn icon on Taskbar is just as convenient and perhaps less of a bother.

Notwithstanding the name, CDBurnerXP [http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home ] burns both CDs and DVDs and works fine with Windows 7 (and 8 for that matter).

It's got a simple "Copy" dialogue that's just as simple as Roxio's.

Although both Roxio and CDBurnerXP let you burn "directly" to a CD, the copies are NOT "... all done in memory ..."  ==>  in both cases they simply write a temp file to the hard drive and then delete it when done.

... here's the Copy Disc dialogue with CDBurnerXP -- if you simply check the CD burner as the target (instead of a hard disk file), the copy will be made without any intervention on your part -- except, of course, to change the discs if you're using the same physical drive for both the source and target.
