Quickbooks - editing the recently opened company list

I have a 3 license version of quickbooks 2012 pro.  we have 12 differet businesses that people bounce betweeen.

There's a list of recently opened companies in qbwuser.ini but when we edit things in there, it doesn't seem to keep the list.

Anyone know how to build the list, short of opening all 12 businesses on all 3 machines?

thanks!

thanks, but I have the list set to 20.

but if you look in that qbwinuser.ini file, you see the recentl list (say, 2 companies).  So I add all of the others manually in that ini file, save it and then when I open qb, it still only has the 2 companies and the ini was updated.  Where else does it save that list : (  ?
The Edit List is to remove entries you do not want.

So you need to open QuickBooks on each station and then open the data files (one by one) that you want. Once opened, the list should be retained.

So on one station, if you open 5 data files on that station, are you saying it only saves 2?  It should retain all 5 on that station. Please let me know about this point.

no, I don't want to have to open each company on each machine.  Right now, the 1st machine I am experimenting with has 2 companies in it's previous company list.  the # of companies is set to 20.  If I open a 3rd company, it WILL remember it. But I want to just cut / paste my list of companies into each machine.

There's a file qbwinuser.ini that has those 2 companies.  So I add other lines and it doesn't show the other companies, just the 2.

I checked the registry and there's some previous companies, but again, can't edit the previous companies list (if I delete a company from the registry, still doesn't affect the previous company list).
The Registry Location for the data files is here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intuit\QuickBooksCommon\QBFinder.

The entries look like this:

Number  REG_SZ  Path

I do not recommend editing these entries, so use extreme and excessive caution before you do.

You do not have to. If you open several companies and they will be remained until deleted (or the list gets too big).  You have confirmed the list is sticking in your post, so you should not have to do this every night - Just once.

I have been using the lists for years and my current list is about 6 months old.

think - on 1 machine with 7 companies in the previous list, I exported that branch from the registy, imported into the machine with 2 companies in it's list, open qb and have only the 2 companies.

the lists seem to be unique to each machine, so yeah, on each machine I have to open each company to get it in that machine's list?

This is not a supported way of managing QuickBooks. That is probably why it doesn't work. Also, HKEY_CURRENT_USER will be different for each machine. That is another reason why this does not work.

Yes. I do not see this as an issue. On my machine, I open a number of client ledgers and so have a big recent list. My clients open far fewer and so have only one or two. As I open companies, the list builds.

To open a new company, you must close the existing one, so then use the Open Company button and navigate to the data file. As I note, the list will build.

I remove temporary entries or defunct entries if I change a client ledger location (happens occasionally). Trying to open the wrong file because of the recent list is a much bigger problem than building a list correctly.
