SEO and longtail keywords

I want to optimise my new site for  longtail keywords.
Could you please help me with the following questions:
1.How can I determine the competition for the selected keywords?
2.  Is the number of allinanchor occdurences  for a keyword indicative of the competition.
i.e. if the number of times it appears in anchor text of the keyword is high does this mean that the competition for that longtail keyword is also high?
3.  Similarly would this apply to the number of times it appears in allinttitle?

Market samurai used to be a nice tool to check the competition. ALlinanchor and allintitle would give you a rough idea but not something which you can rely on..

You should be looking at who are on top 10 of the search query, and then their page rank (Not the Domain page rank but the URL PR, it gives you a rough idea about their backlinks)

and then look at the title and description of the result pages in top 10 and see whether all of them contains the exact term or not.. doing all manually would be a hard work but market samurai will do it easily and gives you a very well estimate .

PS: DO not relate the competition you see in adword tool againt the keyword, it is not something to bother about.
