opening saved .msg file does not launch outlook - XenApp5 on Windows 2003 enterprise

We have "Windows Explorer" published on all 10 citrix xenapp5 servers.

When a user try to open saved .msg file from map drive from windows explorer, it does not open neither give any error. We only see "windows installer" windows popup for 1 second and disappear and nothing happans.

However, strange thing is it works fine on some of the citrix servers. So not sure what is causing this and how to resolve. thanks

Are you using Outlook 2010 on your Citrix servers? Can you make sure that you have Outlook is installed on all of them.

If this is the case already, then try this hotfix from Microsoft as I read in a forum that it resolved similar case:

If you are using Outlook 2007 then try using the /f switch as in the following article to launch Outlook:

I think it might be a problem with file associations. Can you try on the affected servers to right click a .msg file then choose open with, choose Outlook from the list of programs then make sure the always open with check box is checked?

Outlook 2007 - opening attachments from .msg files does not launch associated application

1.       Right click the file, and choose “Properties”.

2.       In the “General” tab, click the “Change” button. Here you will find a list of programs, choose the related Office program. If you don’t find it in the list, click the “browse” button and locate the application file on the disk.

3.       Click to select the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” check box if it is not selected.

4.       Click OK.

i assume an outlook account is configured for users on the application server that explorer is published on?   otherwise outlook will not open the file, it will just start the mail setup routine.
