I am attempting to upgrade a 2005 SQL Database.  When i run the upgrade it sees a copy of sql express but not the instance that i want to upgrade.  I have also download the upgraded advisory and it to cannot see the instance.

The instance is working fine and i can log into 2005 Studio Manager and see it.  Any ideas on how i can get the upgrade to see the correct instance?

Potentially stupid question:  Are you sure the instance is on the box that you are attempting to upgrade?

There are no stupid questions.  I am assuming the instance is on the machine i am doing the upgrade from, based on the following facts:

    I am on server1

the instance is server1\amicus in studio manager

the physical database file is located on server1

Note:  The only other server they have is an SBS 2003 which acts has their domain controller and nothing else.  For like 1 week 3 years ago the database was on this machine but i moved it when i rolled out the new server.  The server i am trying to update is Server 2008 64bit

Than I am afraid I have no idea.

    Accepted Solution

The issue was that it was SQL 2005 32bit.  I just ended up removing it and installing sql 2008 64.
