I am working on a client's Iphone 4s.   We can not get his mail app to open.   when selected it briefly opens then immediately closes.  I have closed the app in task switcher, done a hard reboot of the phone, deleted and restored the mail account all to no avail.   Short of a complete restore, anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,

Can you try the following?

1 turn ON airplane mode
2 search through mail for bounced messages
3 delete bounced messages by using the Edit button which appears in inbox view
4 you might find that you also have to go into Settings/Mail and change view to minimum view
5 turn airplane mode OFF
6 mail app should now work

I would do a backup and restore. I've had the same thing on my old 3GS and a restore was the only way to fix it.

You can also try this:

Change the settings of the mail.app to:
Fetch new data: push
Show : 25 recent
Preview: 2 lines
Font size: Medium
Everything else under mail: OFF

If none of the above helps. Delete the e-mail accounts, do a reboot of the iPhone and re-add them. If that doesn't work, only a complete restore will work.

Hi mate,

Can you open the mail account on your mac. Here you need to search for "undeliverable". Delete this and try to open mail.app on your iPhone.

There is however one solution that's not so drastic. But that involves to jailbreak your iPhone.

1.) Jailbreak the iPhone, and made sure Cydia is installed.

2.) Used Cydia to install Boss Prefs.

3.) Within Boss Prefs run "Fix User Dir Permissions."

However it's only 50% sur this fixes the issue. But this only takes 20 minutes (if you want to jailbreak your iPhone / or if he is jailbroken) otherwise only solution is a full restore :(.

Does the app work with another iPhone?
You might have to send it back to the factory before you void the warranty.

Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing worked and I ended up doing a full restore.   That did fix the problem.

That's what I thought. You tried the jailbreak suggestions of mine?
That was the latest try you could do before a full restore like I said. Lickely it works now. Bummer that it was the full resture.

no suggestions worked and ended up doing what I was trying to avoid, (full restore) to resolve the problem
