when a change is made to the master vm in a mcs config, does the machine need to shutdown before updating the linked VMs?  also, does the personal vdisk need to be updated every time a change is made to the master vm?  does it need to be shutdown then also?

Everytime you update the master image by selecting Update Machine catalog in Desktop Studio and point to the new master template, the mcs will create the new private & public snapshots and clone. In a pooled desktops configuration the only thing that will be left is to have your linked VMs restarted (or users logged off).

But, in a dedicated desktop configuration this will not be the case. Each desktop will have to have its own vDisk updated with the new master, as far as I understand. However, there is a powershell that can be used to do this in the following link:

One point of advise: why not using provisioning services instead of mcs as it is much more effective in managing updates for your images.
