Google Apps IMAP No Longer Works?

We have a free Google Apps account.

Everything works fine, but one account in unable to access the account via IMAP.

The web login works, the credentials are right and IMAP is enabled (there are no errors), and it shows the folder structure, but doesn't download any mail in Outlook 2010.  It just stopped a couple of days ago.  A reinstall did not fix it nor a delete and reload of the account credentials.

We tried it in ThunderBird and got the error System Error Failure.

We tried it on a different connection/computer and got similar errors.

All the other email addresses are working without issue.

Google offers no support and I believe this is a server issue.

There is no way to delete this email address and recreate it as there is too much data at stake in the email box.

What to do?

When you say IMAP is enabled, do you mean IMAP is enabled in that account's Email -> Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP -> IMAP Access?

What do "tracert imap.gmail.com" and "tracert imap.googlemail.com" return?

Might be worth trying to disable IMAP on that page, and re-enable after a while.

If you're finding that IMAP still doesn't work after that on a different computer and different connection (or better yet, on a phone), you could start trying to test things with telnet, but really it probably is a server issue and you won't be able to do much without Google Support.

Not sure if you've done your For Business trial yet. If not, you get support during the 30 day trial.

Also, always worth trying to unlock captcha, just to be sure:

cpnz is on track ... make sure you unlock the account.

Google limits the number of concurrent IMAP connections to help prevent spammers from using gmail accounts.   If you have multiple devices all connecting via IMAP, you may exceed the connection limit (each device will open multiple connections concurrently).

To prevent this from happening, we recommend using ActiveSync for iPhones and iPads.

Also, if you upgrade to Google Apps for Business, you can use the Google Apps Sync for MS Outlook, or GASMO, add-on which uses MAPI to sync calendars and contacts as well as email.

We called Google support and it ended up being an issue on their end.
