I have a windows 7 pro laptop connected to a windows small business server 2011.

While online, i cannot rename files or folders that are located in the redirected folder on the server. It's not a permissions problem. When i go to rename the file, moving the cursor by means of the arrows on the keyboard, it jumps back and highlights the file name again.

While  offline, there is no problem renaming the files or folders.

Any clues?

Thanks in advance

What happens if you right-click the file and select "rename"?

BTW, are you trying to change the name of the parent folder?

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply.

This is happening to any random file or folder in the users folder. He has about 13 gigs of data there. Its as if some process is monitoring the users files while he's online and interfering with basic operations like renamng them.

I'm going over there today and will have a better idea later

Thanks again,

If there are 13GB of files in there it is very likely that the offline client side cache (CSC) is corrupt and needs to be rebuilt.   Or, if he also accesses these files from another machine that is online, that machine's CSC may be syncing and resetting the name (although it shouldn't because the determination should be the last modified date -- but with that many files it takes some time for Windows to actually read through everything).

Hi

I got the user to clear out alot of pdfs and then reinitialised the cache but still the same thing. He goes to rename a file, he moves the cursor along the file name with the arrow keys and the file gets highlighted again. Another weird one is that if tries to change the case from upper to lower or vice versa, it looks for permission to do this and even when granted permission, won't allow to change case. I know not related but a bit odd. I had hoped the offline and sync hassles were a thing of the past but not so.

Switch out his keyboard and have him try again.  He may have a stuck key.  (I know this doesn't explain the online/offline thing, but it does explain how there is weird behavior when trying to change a file name -- give it a try and if it doesn't help, then we have at least eliminated that probability).
