How to set up an autonomous domain within another domain

Hi EE,

We have a WAN network in the 10.x.x.x range. It is a single domain. Lets call it "main.com"

I want to create another domain for testing purposes. I want this domain (lets call it "test.com") to be in the 172.16.x.x range but resides in main.com.

I want, test.com to be totally isolated from main.com. The only relationship it has with main.com is that it uses its hardware/networking resources such as SAN resources, ESXi farm to create hosts and its switching infrastructure to route traffic. As far as test.com is concerned, main.com is just the internet.

The reason I want this setup is to set an environment for testing/training that is isolated and can be a test case for prod later on.

Any help, pointers or direction will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Setup Test.com as a child domain of Main.com.  Establish a 1 way trust from Main.com to Main.com.  This will allow Test.com to access resources, but Test.com accounts won't be able to log in to Main.com (Main accounts should be able to log in to Test.com).

Access of teh SAN shouldn't have any domain dependencies (unless you're referring to file shares on servers in the Main.com domain).  If you're mapping LUN's then this wouldn't have a Domain requirement.

Setup DNS Forwards in Main.com so that it can find Test.com and vice versa.  It'll make life easier and ensure replication.

When you're all done and don't need Test.com anymore, you can DCPromo it out of the domain and say "This is the last domain controller in the domain" and Test.com will disappear.

Note:  Having Test.com as a child domain, the FQDN would be Test.main.com

Hi sDuCKx,

thanks for your quick reply. Just asking what do you mean by " Establish a 1 way trust from Main.com to Main.com"? Do you mean main.com to test.com?

Thanks alot
