Hello,

Since a few days we are unable to recieve e-mail trought the build in pop3 connector of our SBS 2011 Server.

We get the error cannot connect to smpt on port 25: error 0x800ccc0e please check is the Exchange transport service is running (it is running).

We've been using the build in pop3 connector for a year now without any problems.
I also get a connection failed error when I telnet to localhost on port 25.

Fix my network and the internet setup wizard do not solve the problem.

As 3rd part software we only have Panda Admin Secure (without the Exchange module) no 3rde party firewalls are installed..

anyone?

Hi,
I had this problem a while ago.  Turned out that the server was running low on free disk space.
Exchange needs >15% free disk space.

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Leslie

Hello,

I also had this problem before but now I have 69.GB free of 167GB on the system disk.
The Exchange server is installed on another partition and it has 156GB free of the 195GB

This should be more then enough, right?

Did you migrate to sbs 2011?  For how long has it been working?

Did you try to disable the Windows firewall then retry?

Hello, I've disabled the firewall but that didn't help.
I also tried “telnet servername 25” from a workstation but I also get a connection failed message.
There  is something else, around the same time the problem occurred, there was a 9MB e-mail sent to about 50 of our sbs users, when I check our webmail of the mail server those mails are still there.

I am now in the process of manually deleting this e-mail from all the users. Could this be the cause?

Don't think it is the problem. Do you have any antivirus installed on the server? Mcafee, Symantec,...etc? If yes try to totally disable them then if this resolves the issue, enable the antivirus again but tune the configuration until it works.

you need to be able to telnet to the server on port 25.  Please check your default receive connector in EMC, Server Configuration, Hub transport

I only have Panda Admin Secure antivirus installed but the Exchange protecion is disabled.
I'll try to uninstall it.

I have multiple recieve connectors in the hub transport:

default SBS-SERVER
SBS-SERVER
Windows SBS Fax Sharepoint Recieve SBS-SERVER
Windows SBS Internet Recieve SBS-SERVER

all are enabled

on the Default SBS-Server I have as FQDN:

SBS-SERVER.hostname.local

on the network tab:
Use these local IP Adresses to reveive mail:
192.168.1.2 port 25 (that is the server IP)
Receive mail from remote servers that have these IP adresses: ( I have 2 values here)
start: 192.168.1.1 end 192.168.1.1
start: 192.168.1.2 end 192.168.1.255

on the Authentication tab:
TLD (checked)
  - enable domein sec (uncheked)
Basic auth is checked
  - offer basic auth only after starting TLS (checked)
Exchange server auth (checked)
Integrated Windows auth (checked)
Externally Secured (unchecked)

on permissions tab:

anonymous (unchecked)
exchange users (checked)
exchange servers (checked
legacy exchange servers (checked)

Can you check the settings on the virtual smtp adapter. You need to add the local subnet of pcs that are allowed to communicate with the server

Hello,

The local subnet was already added on the EMC, Server Configuration, Hub transport
. I still cannot connect to port 25.

How can I check if its still Windows firewall on the SBS that is blocking port 25?
can I open this port with the command prompt?

Hello all

I finally got it fixed... I did the following:

I checked all of the above, all recieve connecors settings where ok.
I removed the Panda Adminsecure package, this version does not contain any firewalling and the exchange protection was not enabled. so this didn't help..

Then I removed the pop3 connector, reinstalled it, that didn't help either..
Finnaly i just deleted all the recieve connectors and recreated them and woop woop I am now able to telnet localhost 25!! at first the mails still didn't get downloaded but after 5 minutes all the pop3 boxes where downloaded and everything works great now..

Tnx for the support..

Just as a comment.......Though the receive connectors could definitely could have been the problem the port issue is very interesting as you should be able to close port 25 and have it still work.  The POP connector is an outgoing connection on port 110 and "pulls" the e-mail rather than using smtp to "push" the e-mail to the server on port 25.

Hello all,

I didn't close this case because I had another related problem after this fix.. I’ll try to explain..
I couldn't connect to localhost port 25 and I got a "cannot connect to smtp on localhost error 0x800ccc19" from my pop3 connector.

After deleting all my smtp receive connectors I was able to telnet to localhost port 25.
I recreated the receive connectors and was able to get the pop3 connector working again! w00t! but..
shortly after this I got feedback from the clients telling me outlook 2010 was asking for the exchange password. in the credentials box the username (user.name) was listed, if I entered the password I got the same login request. To fix this I had to add the domain name to the username (domain\user.name) then the outlook connected (after a while).
so.. I compared all the smtp receive settings from another sbs 2011 but can't the problem.

the current situation is the following..
when the users open outlook the outlook client takes about 1 or 2 minutes to show "connected to exchange" after 15 or 30mins (random) it asks for the password again. If I telnet to localhost port 25 it seems to try to connect but I just get a black telnet screen not showing anything.. the pop3 connector still gives the 0x800ccc19 error but sometimes the mails are retrieved from the pop3 connector. So at times everything seems to work, but a moment later the pop3 connector stops working and my clients get disconnected again..

to make things worse I do not have a sbs backup that I can use for this machine so I have to be able to fix this.. ¿

SBS 2011 should be using its own smtp receive connector (Windows SBS Internet Receive <ServerName> - not the one called Default.
Check the settings there.
Also, you can run the "Fix my Network" wizard in the SBS console, Network, Connectivity.

Leslie
