Server 2008 reporting disk has more data

2008R2 64 bit. Disk reports 70 gig used when looking at the disk stats in disk management but when selecting all the contents of the drive it reports 40 gig. Hidden and hide protect os files is unchecked. I ran winstat and also came back with 40gig.
Any idea what is taking up. The machine is running on vmware. Volume shadow copies are disabled

I think this may be related to the disk being thin/thick provisioned in vmware. Not sure what the behaviour is in disk management as the data grows

Use the Run As Administrator option to get a true view of the disk.

Even when you are logged on as an administrator, elevated priviledges are required to access a number of folders, and any tool that you run without elevated permissions will give you a false result.

Right click your winstat icon (if it has an icon) and select "Run As Administrator" or run it in an elevated command prompt if it's a command-line product.
