Windows Small Business Server 2000 license agreement

We have SBS 2000 installed and for the most part it is fine.  We are lloking at upgrading the whole thing at some point, but this question is about the licensing for SBS 2000.

Can we upgrade just one piece of the package?

For example can we upgrade the SQL that came with SBS from MSSQL 2000 to MSSQL 2008?  I do not have the original license agreement and navigating the Microsoft website is nasty.

There is no "upgrade" option with any version of SBS, and unfortunately you cannot install a newer version of any SBS component on an existing SBS.  You can however install a new separate SQL server (physical or virtual) in your SBS 2000 environment.  It would require a new server licenses, SQL, and Server & SQL CAL's.  You may have some authentication issues due to the age of your O/S, but those can likely be dealt with as they are technical issues, not licensing.

Personally I would install a 'hefty' server that could run SBS 2011 or server 2012 and your SQL server as virtual machines.  Install the new SQL server as a VM now, with plans to later upgrade your domain controller as another VM.

Agreed - and there's a serious problem with being "just fine" with SBS 2000 - it's 12 years old and no longer updated... Are you just fine without running antivirus?  Because even if you are, 2000 is so old and not being seriously patched by MS nowadays that in some respects, it's like running a system without AV.

Plus, what hardware are you running it on?  Odds are, it's very old and WILL FAIL sooner than later.  I don't THINK SQL has any AD dependencies, but if it does, I can all but promise 2000 isn't going to cut it.

    Thanks folks.

I agree with the points on the hardware and software and AV.  If I had my way we would have upgraded 3 years ago.  But I work for the owner of the company and he is fine with the current situation.  Mainly a developer was pushing for upgrading SQL server only.  But as i understood it and you have now confirmed, you cannot do that inside SBS.  We would need to install a new server with SQL on it.  Given pricing and other issues it makes more sense to upgrade the entire thing.

If doing so your most cost effective way to do so would be to buy SBS 2011 with the premium add-on.  This will give you licensing for a hyper-V host, an SBS 2011 VM, a separate server VM for SQL, and the SQL license.  The CAL's are more affordable this way as well.

Keep in mind SBS is being discontinued so you have about a year to do so. After that you will also need a separate Exchange server and CAL's for each service are purchased separately.
