A typical thing that everyone will ask you to do first when you are having issues is to check the disk and "Repair Permissions".  Both tasks can be accomplished using Disk Utility that comes with the OS.

    As for tools...

    Free Virus Scanner:
    - ClamXav available from the AppStore

    Free Maintenance/Cleanup:
    - for more advanced users:
Onyx by Titanium Software (make sure to download version for your OSX version)
    - for everyone else:
       Maintenance by Titanium Software
    both available from

Avast is available for Mac as well, I use it, works great.
AvastAnd I use it on my XP systems.

    Get it here:

One feature I like a lot is the Webrep analysis of every site that comes up when  you do a google search, or other search listing lots of websites. It flags those that seem okay based on user results, and those that are potential problems. You'll see how it works if you install the program.

Get the free version, it works fine.
