Windows 8 Canon ip5300 won't install error 0xBC8

Upgraded Win7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro final x64 and although it created a printer called "Inkjet" it's not working and when you try to upgrade the driver you get:

"Driver Management concluded the process to install driver prnca00e.inf_amd64_651eeed98428be5e\prnca00e.inf for Device Instance ID USBPRINT\CANONIP5300\8&328AE576&2&USB001 with the following status: 0xBC8."

Done a hunt for this and there seems to be people with this error but no answers of how to fix it?

If anyone knows of a fix for this I would be grateful as I don't want to change my printer as it works fine.

This is not compatible with window 8

The Pixma IP5300 is a GDI printer (which rely on the Windows graphics engine to convert the page into dots on the paper). GDI printers are cheap, but as they rely so heavily on the Operating System, their drivers are usually very specific to the OS. It looks as if the Win7 driver does not work under Win8.

You will need to wait until Canon release a Win8 driver.
Canon has not yet released (& may never?) upgraded drivers for this printer to work on Win. 8
You can try the Compatibility Troubleshooter but you may  out of luck.
First, get into your file explorer on the program that you are going to run (Canon ip5300) .  Click on Application, Troubleshoot Compatibility.

I am having trouble believing that it's not compatible because it worked fine under both the developer preview and the consumer preview versions. I am wondering if there is now a Windows 8 version of the driver and it is somehow using some remnant of the Windows 7 version of the printer when it should have used the Windows 8 version solely.

In the cases where I installed the CP and DP versions of Windows 8 I did a clean install, then when I had evaluated the O/S at those stages I wiped Windows 8 and installed Windows 7 again until the final version came out.  Because I wanted to see how the upgrade worked from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro I did an upgrade rather than a clean install and barring the printer everything else went as smooth as clockwork!? so I wanted to see (as I would do with a client's computer) if the printer issue could be rectified rather than reaching for the clean install first.

I reckon a clean install will probably resolve it, but I'd rather find a way of wiping the printer completely and getting Windows 8 to install its own version.  There clearly is one as when I ask it to update the driver it finds one, but fails to install it with the error mentioned above. Also the fact that there isn't a driver on the Canon website for Windows 7 makes me believe that Windows Update would at least have a Windows 7 driver it could use and as far as I am aware Windows 8 should be able to use both Vista and Windows 7 drivers.

Compatibility Troubleshooter
Did it not work or did you not try it?

Michael,
I had a look at the printer troubleshooter and it wouldn't give me a positive result no matter which set of options I chose.

I also looked at the link you posted and that was to do with installing the printer using an executable to set it up and that not working due to incompatibility with the O/S. I tried an executable driver and it ran OK but said the driver was not for my model of printer!?

So in the end I found an "inf" style Vista driver when all the good suggestions you had made didn't work.

Siv
Thanks for the clarification.
Glad you found a solution.
You can check here. yet the canon has not given the specification about window 8 incompatibility then how ill work.

@Darkworld1000

This was pretty much where I went first, if you look through that list of drivers and software you will see that the most recent printer driver there is XP era at number 84 in the list.  All the other stuff is supporting software to assist printing not actual drivers and the XP era driver follows a different driver model than the Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 class drivers use.

In the past when I have looked for drivers for the Pixma iP5300, Canon's stuff on compatibility is here:

http://www.canon.co.uk/Operating_System_Drivers/index.aspx#tcm:14-676850

The key bit is:

"Windows 7 compatibility:

Inkjet printer, multifunctional, fax and scanner products:

Canon will support its inkjet printer, multifunctional, fax and scanner products with Windows 7. Canon will be distributing drivers in two ways after Windows 7 is released.

The drivers will be available pre-installed in Windows 7 operating system or available for download via Windows Update.

The drivers will be available from the Download Centre after the launch of Windows 7.

To find a list of applicable models choose the applicable product group:

    Inkjet multifunctional
        Win7-Inkjet_MFP [PDF, 7 KB] [PDF, 7KB]
        Win7-Inkjet_MFP_Software [PDF, 7 KB] [PDF, 7KB]
    Inkjet printer
        Win7-Inkjet_SFP [PDF, 8 KB] [PDF, 8KB]
        Win7-Inkjet_SFP_Software [PDF, 10 KB] [PDF, 10KB]
    Scanner
        Win7-Scanner [PDF, 5 KB] [PDF, 5KB]
        Win7-Scanner-Software [PDF, 4 KB] [PDF, 4KB]"

Which didn't really solve the problem as I cannot find a manually installable Windows 7 or Windows 8 driver.  This is why I emailed Canon's tech support as I am sure they have the driver package that gets sent to Microsoft to be included on the CD or if it's Microsoft who have created it they can probably get it.

It will be interesting to see if they get back to me.  I suspect me wanting a driver for a printer they probably consider obsolete is not high on their list of priorities.

ya,, I already checked that url also, there is clearly mention that its for window 7 not for windows 8.

I managed to fix it myself and the advice from the experts was clearly wrong.
