I have a server which has licenses installed, dns-name is license.mydomain.local, I would like to use it for WSUS to but then use the name WSUS. Can I just enter a DNS entry and use it as WSUS.mydomain.local?

It would be cosmetic, but yes you can create a CNAME for the WSUS server.

Why a cname, I used a simple DNS-name which works fine?

Either or.  I said CNAME cause that's what I'm used to doing for alias'.  But A records work just as well.
